Libermann: Commentary on St. John, 4:11
As Our Lord talked to this sinful woman, he was touching her heart with his grace and gradually bringing her enlightenment. She understood nothing of what he was saying; she just suspected that there was something supernatural in it. We see here a soul that is attentive to the words of Our Lord, who wants to forget nothing of the circumstances in which these words are spoken. She does not understand very well, but we can see that a little light is beginning to penetrate and her heart is touched; her defences are beginning to crumble. She talks to him with respect and affection.

Notre-Seigneur à mesure qu’il parlait à cette femme pécheresse touchait son cœur par sa grâce intérieure et l’éclairait peu à peu… Elle ne comprenait rien à ce que Notre-Seigneur lui dit. Seulement elle soupçonnait qu’il y avait quelque chose de surnaturel là-dessous… On voit une âme attentive à toutes les paroles de Notre-Seigneur qui ne perd aucune des circonstances dans lesquelles les paroles divines lui étaient dites. Elle ne les comprend pas bien mais on voit qu’une petite lumière commence à la frapper, et son cœur est touché ; ses préventions sont tombées. Elle lui parle avec respect et affection de cœur. À medida que Nosso Senhor falava a esta mulher pecadora a sua graça interior tocava o seu coração e iluminava-o pouco a pouco... Ela não compreende nada do que Nosso Senhor lhe diz. Somente suspeitava que havia qualquer coisa de sobrenatural escondida... Vemos uma alma atenta a todas as palavras de Nosso Senhor que não perde nenhuma das circunstâncias nas quais as palavras divinas lhe eram ditas. Ela não as compreende bem mas vê-se que uma pequena luz a começa a impressionar e toca o seu coração; as suas prevenções caem por terra. Fala-lhe com respeito e afeição do coração.
