View AllThe outstanding trait of Bishop Shanahan in regard to friendship and love is his constant refusal to separate theological and human love. He never feared 'particular friendships'. He saw everything in the light of God, so friendship was for him 'divinised human love'.

1792 United Kingdom
Père Jacques Bertout becomes the first known Spiritan to work in mainland Britain. He flees to England at the French Revolution and works somewhere in Yorkshire for the next 10 years. He returns to France in 1802 and his dying uncle, Père Duflos (the 5th Superior General), asks him to revive the Congregation and Seminary.
1920 Cameroon
Père Malessard is appointed Apos-tolic Administrator. He reorganises the Vicariat, re-opens the missions that the German Palatine Fathers had been forced to abandon and establishes new ones. He dies suddenly on 11.03.22.
1929 Nigeria
Archbishop Arthur Hinsley, later Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, comes to Nigeria as Apostolic visitor. Regarding Bishop Shanahan's Vicariat he writes, 'This is the most flourishing mission in British - if not in the whole of - West Africa.'
1945 Netherlands
Re-opening of the junior seminary at Weert, the senior scholasticate at Gemert and, a little later, the houses at Baarle Nassau and Gennep for the brothers. Around 116 Priests and Brothers are ready to depart for the missions: 30 go to Angola, 25 to Bagamoyo and Kilimanjaro, 14 to Cameroon, 4 to Gabon, 5 to Loango, 6 to Brazzaville, 6 to Bangui, 5 to Senegal, 10 to Tefé and 6 to Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Le trait remarquable de Mgr Shanahan par rapport à l’amitié et à l’amour, c’est son refus constant de séparer l’amour théologique et humain.~ Il n’a jamais eu peur des ‘amitiés particulières’. Il voit tout dans la lumière de Dieu, de sorte que l’amitié était pour lui un amour humain divinisé.

1792 Royaume-Uni
Le P. Jacques Bertout est le premier Spiritain connu à travailler en Angleterre. Il y fuit lors de la Révolution française et travaille quelque part dans le Yorkshire pendant 10 ans. Il retourne en France en 1802 et son oncle mourant, le P. Duflos, 5ième Supérieur général, lui demande de redonner vie à la Congrégation et au Séminaire.
1920 Cameroun
Le P. Malessard est nommé Administrateur Apostolique. Il réorganise le Vicariat du Cameroun, réouvre les postes établis par les pères Palottins et en fonde de nouveaux , ainsi qu’un séminaire. Il meurt d’épuisement le 11.03.22.
1929 Nigeria
Mgr Arthur Hinsley, futur Cardinal Arche-vêque de Westminster, vient au Nigeria en qualité de Visiteur Apostolique. Du Vicariat de Mgr Shanahan, il écrit : «C’est la mission la plus florissante de l’Afrique de l’Ouest britannique, sinon de toute l’Afrique. »
1945 Pays-Bas
Reprise de l'Ecole Apostolique de Weert et du grand scolasticat à Gemert. Baarle Nassau & Gennep (Frères) un peu plus tard. Pendant l'année après la guerre, à peu près 116 jeunes Pères et Frères sont prêts à partir à la mission: 30 pour l'Angola, 25 pour Bagamoyo et Kilimandjaro, 14 pour le Cameroun, 4 pour le Gabon, 5 pour Loango, 6 pour Brazzaville, 6 pour Bangui, 5 pour le Sénégal, 10 pour Tefé, 6 pour la Guadeloupe et la Martinique.
O traço característico de Mgr Shanahan com relação à amizade e ao amor, está na sua recusa constante em separar o amor teológico e humano. Ele nunca teve medo das ‘amizade parti-culares’. Via tudo à luz de Deus, de modo que para ele a amizade era o “amor humano divinizado”.

1792 Inglaterra
O P. Jacques Madeleine Bertout tornou-se o primeiro espiritano conhecido a trabalhar na Inglaterra. Foge da França e trabalha algures em Yokshire durante 10 anos. Volta para a França em 1802; estando o seu tio à morte, o P. Duflos, 5º Superior Geral, pede-lhe (1805) para restaurar a Congregação e o Seminário, suprimidos pela Revolução.
1920 Camarões
O P. Malessard é nomeado Administrador Apostólico. Reorganiza o Vicariato dos Camarões, reabre postos criados pelos padres Palotinos e funda outros, bem como um seminário. Morre de esgotamento a 11.03.1922.
1929 Nigéria
O Arcebispo Arthur Hinsley, futuro Cardeal Arcebispo de Westminster, vem à Nigéria como Visitador apostólico. Referindo-se ao vicariato do bispo Shanahan, escreve: “esta é a missão mais florescente da àfrica de Oeste britânica, talvez mesmo em toda a África”.
1945 Holanda
Retomada da Escola Apostólica de Weert e do grande escolasticado em Gemert. Baarle Nassau & Gennep (Irmãos) um pouco mais tarde. No ano a seguir à guerra, mais ou menos 116 jovens Padres e Irmãos estão prontos a partir para as missões: 30para Angola, 25 para o Bagamoio e Kilimanjaro, 14 para os Camarões, 4 para o Gabão, 5 para Loango, 6 para Brazzaville, 6 para Bangui, 5 para o Senegal, 10 para Tefé, 6 para a Guadalupe e Martínica.
