Priests often think of their own sanctification alone and souls are somewhat neglected. They have more zeal for recollection and other virtues which tend to their own sanctification than for the salvation of souls. This is a great fault. Once we are priests we belong to ourselves no more, we belong to souls according to the divine will which makes use of us in the services of his good pleasure.

Souvent des prêtres ne pensent qu’à leur sanctification et les âmes sont un peu négligées. Ils ont plus de zèle pour le recueillement et les autres vertus qui tendent à leur propre sanctification qu’ils n’en ont pour le salut des âmes. C’est une grande faute. Une fois qu’on est prêtre, on ne s’appartient plus, on appartient aux âmes d’après la divine volonté qui nous emploie auprès d’elle selon son bon plaisir.

Muitas vezes os padres pensam só na sua própria santificação e as almas são negligenciadas. Têm mais zelo pelo recolhimento e as outras virtudes que tendem à própria santificação do que têm pela salvação das almas. É uma grande falta. Um vez que se é padre, já não se pertence a si mesmo, pertence-se às almas segundo a vontade divina que nos emprega junto delas segundo o seu bel prazer.

Excessive economic, social and cultural inequalities among peoples arouse tensions and conflicts, and are a danger to peace. As we said to the Fathers of the Council when we returned from our journey of peace to the United Nations: "The condition of the peoples in process of development ought to be the object of our consideration; or better: our charity for the poor in the world (and there are multitudes of them) must become more considerate, more active, more generous". To wage war on misery and to struggle against injustice is to promote, along with improved conditions, the human and spiritual progress of all men, and therefore the common good of humanity. Peace cannot be limited to a mere absence of war, the result of an ever precarious balance of forces. No, peace is something that is built up day after day, in the pursuit of an order intended by God, which implies a more perfect form of justice among men.

Death of Mgr. Théophile Mbemba, the first local Archbishop of Brazzaville. He is succeeded by his coadjutor, Mgr. Biayenda.
Les disparités économiques, sociales et culturelles trop grandes entre les peuples provoquent tensions et discordes, et mettent la paix en péril.~ Notre charité pour les pauvres qui sont dans le monde - et ils sont légions infinies - doit devenir plus attentive, plus active et plus généreuse. Combater a miséria e lutar contra a injustiça, é promover não só o bem-estar mas também o progresso humano e espiritual de todos e, portanto, o bem comum da humanidade. A paz não se reduz a uma ausência de guerra, fruto do equilíbrio sempre precário das forças.
