Be convinced of this, that to fail in the line of God’s work you have only to decide on the following way of acting: “I will go straight to my goal and not bend, I will act with force and power, and I will think with frankness and always tell people what I think of them”. You will shatter yourself and shatter others, you will pull down instead of building up. You should get what you can without breaking anyone. Besides, at the end if we pay attention, we will easily discover that we ourselves are far from perfection, while wishing it absolutely in others.

Persuadez-vous bien que pour échouer dans la direction des oeuvres de Dieu on n’a qu’à se proposer ces manières d’agir : « j’irai droit à mon but et je ne plierai pas, j’agirai avec énergie et vigueur, j’agirai avec franchise et dirai toujours aux gens tout ce que je pense d’eux ». Vous vous briserez ou vous briserez les autres, vous détruirez au lieu d’édifier. Il faut obtenir ce que l’on peut et ne pas briser. Et au bout du compte, si nous faisons attention, nous découvrirons bien facilement que nous-mêmes, nous sommes loin de la perfection, en la voulant si absolument dans les autres.

Convença-se bem que para falhar na direção das obras de Deus basta propôr-a si mesmo esta forma de agir : « Irei direito ao meu fim, não me dobrarei a nada, agirei com energia e vigor, agirei com franqueza e direi sempre às pessoas o que penso delas ». Você se destruirá ou destruirá os outros em vez de edificar. É preciso obter o que se pode e não quebrar. E no fim de contas, se prestarmos atenção, descobriremos muito facilmente que nós próprios estamos longe da perfeição, querendo-a de modo tão absoluto nos outros.

We must be faithful to our missionary tradition of learning languages and taking root amongst a people. We should not feel guilty about limiting our work to a specific human group. Let us not be over-impressed by large-scale performances. The fruits of an evangelisation that is too rapid, simply in order to occupy an area, can be swept away by the first storm that comes along. I think we are on the right track whenever we are working with people from the heart of their unique cultural experience from which God calls them by name. In our mission, we are not looking for immediate results; we put our trust in the slow and lasting fruits of the witness given by communities inspired by the Gospel.

Pierre Schouver, the Superior General, approaches Cardinal Camillo Ruini with a view to the Congregation taking over a parish in Rome. The reply is positive and encouraging.
Au nom même des défis actuels, nous devons rester fidèles à notre tradition missionnaire d’apprendre les langues locales et de nous enraciner dans un peuple. N’ayons pas de complexes à travailler dans un groupe humain limité et particulier. Ne nous laissons pas trop impressionner par les grandes performances. Les résultats d’une évangélisation rapide pour occuper le terrain peuvent être balayés par la première tempête. Quand nous travaillons avec les gens à partir de leur expérience singulière au sein de laquelle Dieu les appelle par leur nom, je crois que nous sommes sur la bonne voie... Nous croyons à la fécondité lente et durable du témoignage de communautés inspirées par l’Évangile.

Em nome dos desafios actuais, devemos permanecer fiéis à nossa tradição missionária de aprender as línguas locais e de nos inculturarmos. Não tenhamos complexos em trabalhar num grupo humano limitado e particular. Não nos deixemos impressionar pelos grandes êxitos. Os resultados duma rápida evangelização para ocupar o terreno podem ser varridos pela primeira tempestade. Quando trabalhamos com as pessoas a partir da sua experiência singular no seio da qual Deus as chama pelo seu nome, creio que estamos no bom caminho... Acreditamos na fecundidade lenta e durável do testemunho de comunidades inspiradas pelo Evangelho.
