Three elements go to make up the spiritual state of the Congregation: community life, the apostolate and the spirit of religion. The "spirit of religion" means that we totally abandon all personal interests and consecrate ourselves to the glory and the will of God. Although the spirit of religion, stability and the spiritual good of the Congregation all make us wish that we could take the three vows of religion, present circumstances oblige the Congregation to deprive itself of this great good and to force nobody into taking them.

A decree from Rome raises the Congregation from a "Society of the Apostolic Life" to the rank of a "religious Congregation".
1874 Gabon
Armand Bambara from Gabon receives the tonsure at St. Joseph de Ngazobil (Senegal). He continues with his theological studies but dies at Libreville (Gabon) on June 30th, 1883.

The Volunteer International Christian Service (VICS) is founded by Fr. Des McGoldrick.
1989 Ethiopia
At the Enlarged General Council in Arusha, Tanzania, a special appeal is made by the Borana group for personnel. The Nigerian Province agrees to send one of their men, Peter Osuji, to join the group.
Trois choses constituent l’état spirituel de la Congrégation : la vie de communauté, l’apostolat et l’esprit de religion. L’esprit de religion veut qu’on abandonne entièrement tout intérêt propre, et qu’on consacre tout son être à la seule gloire, au seul bon plaisir et au seul intérêt de Dieu. Quoique l’esprit de religion, la stabilité et le bien spirituel de la Congrégation donneraient à désirer que nous fissions les trois vœux accoutumés, cependant les circonstances obligent la Congrégation à se priver d’un si grand bien, et à n’y astreindre aucun de ses membres. [Le 21 mars 1846, Mr le Supérieur, expliquant cet article, a déclaré que désormais tout le monde devait faire les vœux ! (note Lannurien)].

1874 Gabon
A St Joseph de Ngazobil (Sénégal), Armand Bambara, du Gabon, reçoit la tonsure. Il poursuit au Sénégal ses études théologique, mais meurt à Libreville le 30 juin 1883.

1989 Éthiopie
Au Conseil Général Élargi d’Arusha, en Tanzanie, un appel spécial est lancé par le groupe du Borana pour avoir du personnel. La Province du Nigeria accepte d’envoyer un de ses membres, Peter Osuji, pour rejoindre le groupe
Três coisas constituem o estado espiritual da Congregação: a vida de comunidade, o apostolado e o espírito de religião. O espírito de religião quer que se abandone inteiramente todo o interesse próprio, e que se consagre todo o seu ser unicamente à glória, ao bel-prazer e ao interesse de Deus. Embora o espírito de religião, a estabilidade e o bem espiritual da Congregação levassem a desejar que fizéssemos os três votos costumados, no entanto as circunstâncias obrigam a Congregação a privar-se dum tão grande bem, e a não obrigar a isso nenhum dos seus membros. [A 21 de Março de 1846, o Superior, explicando este artigo, declarou que no futuro todos deviam fazer os votos ! (nota Lannurien)]
