How should one take one’s holiday? Very happily I would say you have to take a walk, have fun, but do all with decency and gravity, and by taking care not to lose sight of the fact that God alone must have all our love. We can then abandon ourselves to the relaxation that we are taking, with all simplicity of our heart and without disturbing ourselves in the least; because if we truly love God with all the fullness of our heart we can freely do everything. You know these words of Augustin “Love and do what you want”.

Comment faut-il prendre ses vacances ? Très gaiement, dirai-je, il faut se promener, s’amuser, mais tout cela avec décence et gravité, et en prenant soin de ne pas perdre de vue que Dieu seul doit avoir tout notre amour. Nous pouvons alors nous abandonner au délassement que nous prenons, avec toute la simplicité de notre coeur et sans nous gêner le moins du monde ; car si nous aimons réellement Dieu de toute la plénitude de notre coeur nous pouvons faire librement toutes choses. Vous savez bien ces paroles de saint Augustin « Aimez et faites ce que vous voulez ».

Como devemos passar as férias ? Muito alegremente, direi, é preciso passear, divertir-se, mas tudo com decência e gravidade, procurando não perder de vista que só Deus deve ter todo o nosso amor. Podemos então entregar-nos aos divertimentos, com toda a simplicidade do nosso coração e sem nenhuma preocupação; porque se realmente amamos a Deus com toda a plenitude do nosso coração podemos fazer livremente todas as coisas. Conheceis bem as palavras de Santo Agostinho «Ama e faz o que quiseres ».

From the beginning, our mission has favoured the poor. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to the poor. As for Justice and Peace, the members of the Chapter noted that an awareness of J & P issues has greatly increased in the Congregation but much remains to be done in clarifying the type of action to be undertaken. It is not just a question of denouncing abuses, but also of wise action and encouraging what is good. Each Spiritan will look for opportunities for action within his grasp in order to become the voice of the voiceless.

The house at Braga becomes a principal community.
1904 United Kingdom
Mgr Le Roy, Superior General, and Fr Larry Healy, Provincial of Ireland, agree to rent a property at Prior Park, near Bath. The noviciate for future Irish clerics and brothers opens there on 8 October 1904, with Fr. John T. Murphy as novice master, and continues until 1907.
1923 Rome
In the wake of the communist revolution in Russia, the Congregation is asked by Pius XI, through Cardinal Gasparri, to open a seminary in Rome for the training of priests for Russia. Mgr. Le Roy is most reluctant, saying that our resources are already over-stretched. Finally, the Jesuits agree to take it on and they are running it to this day (B.G. 31, p. 189).
1967 Nigeria
The beginning of the civil war in Nigeria. Subsequently, approximately 280 Irish confreres are displaced and later find work in other circumscriptions, including Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, PNG and Australia.
La mission n’est pas d’abord un déplacement géographique mais un passage de frontières culturelles et un mouvement vers les groupes défavorisés, exclus et opprimés. Comme ces frontières et situations changent, les fronts de la mission se déplacent. Il y a un équilibre à trouver entre la consolidation des tâches déjà entreprises et l’ouverture à de nouveaux horizons.

Antes de mais a missão não é uma transposição geográfica mas uma passagem de fronteiras culturais e um movimento ao encontro de grupos desfavorecidos, excluídos, oprimidos. Como estas fronteiras e situações mudam, as frentes da missão deslocam-se. É preciso encontrar um equilíbrio entre a consolidação das actividades já empreendidas e a abertura a novos horizontes.

1904 Inglaterra
Mgr Le Roy, Superior Geral e o P. Larry Healy, Superior Provincial da Irlanda, alugam uma propriedade em Prior Park, perto de Bath.. O Noviciado para os noviços clérigos e irmãos irlandeses, abre a 8 de Outubro de 1904 com o P. John T Murphy como Mestre de Noviços; permanece aí até 1907.

A seguir à revolução comunista na Rússia, o Cardeal Gaspari, em nome de Pio XI, pede à Congregação para abrir em Roma um seminário para formar padres para a Rússia. Mgr LE Roy está pouco disposto a isso, alegando que os nossos recursos estão já muito dispersos. Finalmente os Jesuítas aceitam: empregam-se nisso até aos nossos dias.
