View AllIn 1776, the Congregation of the Holy Spirit was asked to guarantee 20 missionaries and a Prefect Apostolic in French Guiana. At the revolution of 1792, the Congregation suffered the same fate as all the other religious establishments in France: its seminary was suppressed, its priests scattered and its house sold by the State. As soon as peace was restored by the Concordat of 1801, M. Bertout, alone and without a house, recommenced the work of M. Poulart-Desplaces with great difficulty.

1842 Gabon
Erection of the Vicariat Apostolic of the Deux Guinées. It consists of all the territory between Senegal and the Orange river, apart from the area under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Angola and Congo. Bishop Barron is the first Vicar Apostolic.
1898 Ireland
It is decided to set up a Senior Scholasticate for the Irish Province at St Joseph's, Rockwell. Among the eleven theological students is one Joseph Shanahan. The experiment lasts only 2 years and then the clerical students return to France until Kimmage Manor is purchased in 1911.
1900 USA
Br. Philippus Lafferty becomes the first U.S.-born Spiritan to sail for Africa. Stationed in Sierra Leone, he dies four years later.
1912 United Kingdom
St Joseph's Parish, Peasley Cross, St Helens, is taken on by the Irish Province; because of its proximity to the port of Liverpool, it will also serve as a base for Spiritans leaving for the missions. The parish is closed in 1995. Although pastoral responsibility has long since passed to the English Province, two confreres from the Irish Province are running the parish at the time of its closure.
En 1776, la congrégation du Saint-Esprit fut chargée d’entretenir habituellement vingt missionnaires et un préfet apostolique à la Guyane française. A la grande révolution de 1792, la congrégation du Saint-Esprit partagea le sort de tous les autres établissements religieux de la France. Son séminaire fut supprimé, ses prêtres dispersés, sa maison vendue par l’Etat. Dès que la paix fut rendue à la France par le concordat de 1801, M. Bertout, seul et sans maison, recommença l’œuvre de M. Poulart-Desplaces, au milieu de difficultés sans nombre.

Le Fr. Philippus Lafferty est le 1er Spiritain né américain à s’embarquer pour l’Afrique. Affecté en Sierra Leone, il y meurt 4 ans après.

A paróquia de S. José, em Peasley Cross, é confiada à Província Irlandesa por estar perto do porto de Liverpool. Serve de base para os padres de partida para as missões. Embora a responsabilidade pastoral pertencesse durante muito tempo à Província Inglesa, dois confrades irlandeses estavam de facto na paróquia quando foi encerrada, em 1995.
