On Founder’s Day, the Province of Nigeria South East celebrated the continuity of its mission with the inauguration of its new provincial leadership team, renewing its commitment to the Spiritan charism.
The Province of Nigeria South East of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans) celebrated the Founder’s Day of the Congregation on October 2, 2026, at the Holy Ghost Provincialate in Onitsha. The celebration combined thanksgiving and fraternity with a renewed commitment to the Spiritan mission, while also serving as the occasion for the inauguration of the Province’s new Administration.
The event brought together confreres from across the Province to remember with gratitude the life and missionary vision of Fr. Claude Poullart des Places, C.S.Sp., whose legacy continues to inspire Spiritan service to the Church.
The celebration centered on the Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Fr. Austin Nwosu, C.S.Sp. (outgoing and incoming Provincial Superior). In his homily, Fr. John Asomugha, C.S.Sp., encouraged the confreres to remain conscious of their calling and attentive to God’s guidance and providence.
Fr. Asomugha emphasized that remaining on the "right path" requires fidelity to the legacy, spirituality, and missionary vision of the founders, while also living the Spiritan charism creatively in response to the needs of the present time. Leadership, therefore, was presented as a service offered to God and exercised in fidelity to the Congregation’s mission.
Following the Mass, Fr. Francis Akwue, C.S.Sp., spoke on behalf of the confreres to express gratitude to Fr. Austin Nwosu, C.S.Sp., for his four years of dedicated service as Provincial Superior. He acknowledged Fr. Austin's commitment, sacrifices, and efforts in guiding the Province and advancing its mission, and encouraged him as he begins another four-year term. A token of appreciation was presented to him on behalf of the confreres.
Fr. Austin, in turn, recognized the members of the outgoing Provincial Council—Fr. John Asomugha, Fr. Valentine Ezeh, Fr. Malachy Eleanya, Fr. Jude Ekemgba, Fr. Donatus Akunne, and Fr. Vitalis Anusionwu—for their collaboration, counsel, and commitment during the previous four years. He stressed that leadership is a shared responsibility and that the achievements of an administration depend on the cooperation and dedication of many. Each outgoing council member received a token of appreciation.
The ceremony formally inaugurated the new Provincial Leadership Team, with the following responsibilities:
Each member received an Instrumentum Laboris, formally entrusting him with the responsibilities of his office. The presentation emphasized that Spiritan leadership is fundamentally a ministry of service, collaboration, and mission, directed towards the good of the Congregation, the Church, and the people they serve.
The convergence of Founder’s Day with the inauguration gave the celebration a strong sense of continuity and renewal. The Province expressed gratitude for the past, appreciation for those who had served, and hope for the future.
As the new Administration begins its mandate, the Province is called to remain rooted in the Gospel, faithful to the Spiritan charism, responsive to the signs of the times, and committed to the mission entrusted to the Congregation. The Province places this new chapter under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and the founders and pioneers of the Congregation.
Central Message: The new administration represents a new chapter built on gratitude for the past, faithful service in the present, and hope for the future—guided by the Spiritan ideals of "One Spirit, One Mission, One Family" (Cor unum et anima una).
