I have always found it intriguing, indeed perplexing, that for virtually the first two hundred years of Spiritan history very little was ever published in our Congregation about Claude-François Poullart des Places. We all know that he was born on 26th February 1679, that he founded the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, 27th May 1703, aged 24, and that he died on October 2nd, 1709, aged 30. But curiously we had to wait until the beginning of the 20th century for a biography of Poullart’s life to be published and that was in 1906. It was written by a French confrère, Fr Henri le Floch CSSp, two hundred years after the Congregation’s original foundation and almost sixty years before the definitive critical biography by Fr Joseph Michel CSSp [1962]. Between 1709 and 1962 the only biography of Poullart des Places that any Spiritan could access was that of Henri Le Floch. But who has ever read it?
Recently, I stumbled across a copy of his biography in the Archives of the British Province. I was shocked to discover it had never been opened. I had to cut open every single page myself with a sharp knife. For 120 years it had lain on our shelves unread. After Le Floch’s death on 21st February 1950, the Bulletin Général from the Mother-House began his 28-page obituary with these words: «Among our confrères we see none who has been so bitterly discussed as Fr. Henri Le Floch». And elsewhere: «Fr. Henri Le Floch was undoubtedly the Spiritan who was both the most loved and the most bitterly debated».
My curiosity was duly aroused. Who was this first biographer of our first Founder and why did Henri Le Floch have such a controversial reputation in the Spiritan Congregation? During last summer’s Meeting of the Enlarged General Council of the Congregation held at Chevilly-Larue between June 22nd and July 5th, 2025, where I was working as an oral translator, I used my free time in the afternoon to delve into the General Archives of the Spiritan Congregation to see what I could uncover about this intriguing confrère. In particular, I wanted to try and find out why his biography of Poullart had been ignored and neglected for so long. I was amazed at what I discovered.

Sempre achei intrigante, e até mesmo desconcertante, que, durante praticamente os primeiros duzentos anos da história dos Espiritanos, muito pouco tenha sido publicado na nossa Congregação sobre Cláudio-Francisco Poullart des Places. Todos sabemos que ele nasceu a 26 de fevereiro de 1679, que fundou a Congregação do Espírito Santo no Domingo de Pentecostes, a 27 de maio de 1703, aos 24 anos, e que faleceu a 2 de outubro de 1709, aos 30 anos. Mas, curiosamente, tivemos de esperar até ao início do século XX para que fosse publicada uma biografia da vida de Poullart, o que aconteceu em 1906. Foi escrita por um confrade francês, o P. Henri le Floch CSSp, duzentos anos depois da fundação original da Congregação e quase sessenta anos antes da biografia crítica definitiva do P. Joseph Michel CSSp [1962]. Entre 1709 e 1962, a única biografia de Poullart des Places a que qualquer Espiritano tinha acesso era a de Henri Le Floch. Mas quem é que alguma vez a leu?
Recentemente, deparei-me por acaso com um exemplar da sua biografia nos arquivos da Província Britânica. Fiquei estupefacto ao descobrir que nunca tinha sido aberto. Tive de cortar eu próprio cada página com a ajuda de uma faca afiada. Durante 120 anos, permaneceu nas nossas estantes, sem ser lido. Após a morte de Le Floch, em 21 de fevereiro de 1950, o Boletim Geral da Casa Mãe iniciava o seu obituário de 28 páginas com estas palavras: «Entre os nossos confrades, não vemos nenhum que tenha sido objeto de discussões tão acaloradas como o P. Henri Le Floch». E noutro local: «O P. Henri Le Floch foi, sem dúvida, o Espiritano que foi simultaneamente o mais amado e o mais acirradamente debatido».
A minha curiosidade foi devidamente despertada. Quem era este primeiro biógrafo do nosso primeiro Fundador e por que razão Henri Le Floch tinha uma reputação tão controversa na Congregação do Espírito Santo? Durante a Reunião do Conselho Geral Alargado da Congregação, realizada no verão passado em Chevilly-Larue, entre 22 de junho e 5 de julho de 2025, onde eu trabalhava como tradutor oral, aproveitei o meu tempo livre à tarde para mergulhar nos Arquivos Gerais da Congregação Espiritana, a fim de ver o que poderia descobrir sobre este intrigante confrade. Em particular, queria tentar descobrir por que razão a sua biografia de Poullart tinha sido ignorada e negligenciada durante tanto tempo. Fiquei surpreendido com o que descobri.
