2968 Spiritans serve in over sixty countries in America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, including 2200 members with Perpetual Vows, 524 members in Initial Formation and 243 Lay Associates.
Circumscriptions
The Spiritans live in communities which are grouped under a Circumscription. In most of the cases, a Circumscription corresponds to a country. There are two types of circumscriptions: Provinces and Groups. Provinces are usually more stable, with local members, promotion of vocations and formation structures. Groups are usually created to undertake a specific missionary task. There are communities in smaller or more fragile regions that function directly under the General Administration.
Unions of Circumscriptions
Sometimes, Circumscriptions in the same geographical region, or of the same linguistic area, come together to form a Union of Circumscriptions for the purposes of collaborating in carrying out the mission of the Congregation. For example, they can have common formation programmes or a common missionary project.
“Green Wenje” is an important environmental and ecological initiative designed to combat climate change, restore degraded landscapes, and improve community livelihoods. D. Belmiro Cuica Chissengueti: as a Spiritan, it was a joy to help coordinate the Pope’s visit to Angola. Among those who greeted him at the conclusion of the meeting with missionaries was Father Bernard Duchene, CSSp, who is celebrating 50 years of missionary service in Angola.
A momentous occasion for the country and for the Church. At a time when we hope to strengthen our Spiritan presence in Algeria, this visit encourages us in our apostolic mission, especially in the daily work of dialogue with Muslims.
For us Spiritans, the Pope’s visit was a profound blessing and a renewed call to mission. Truly, “the Lord has been great with us, and we are filled with joy.” The theme of the visit, “Christ, Light of Guinea, towards a future of hope,” beautifully captured both the history and the mission of the Church in Equatorial Guinea, especially as the country marks the 170th anniversary of evangelization.
For us, Spiritan missionaries (C.S.Sp), these visits represent a call to rediscover our charism and the way we live out our mission, in the footsteps of Claude Poullart des Places and François Libermann. They invite us to rekindle our missionary zeal in the Holy Spirit, whose seal we bear, and to commit ourselves more deeply to social justice, while being artisans of peace and reconciliation. Finally, they encourage us to form Christians who are strong in faith and fully engaged in the life and transformation of society.
